Saying Goodbye

We had a big baci recently as a way to say goodbye to everyone who will be leaving this summer. The Lao have bacis for almost every occasion--before a trip, to welcome a new arrival, when constructing a new building, after a death--but the most common baci is for farewells. The white strings are the ubiquitous sign of a baci. They are used to take out the bad luck and lock in the good luck. The guests of honor usually leaves with their wrists weighed down.

Getting some good luck
Of course, a baci is just an opportunity to have a party. So, there is lots of food, including a few pigs.

Yum, pig tail
And lots of beer
