Many of the towns in Laos display the colonial history of the country through numerous French buildings (in various states of disrepair/repair). The Mekong River towns, in particular, seem to have French colonial houses around every corner and an afternoon spent strolling through town to look at the buildings, finished with a Beer Lao on the river is one of our favorite ways to spend time in Laos. These buildings serve as shops, hotels, schools, and restaurants today. In fact, some of the renovated guesthouses are quite impressive. These photos are from Thakhek, Savannakhet, and Don Khone and are just a small sampling what we saw on our road trip.
