Monkey Village

Like any good road trip, we tried to take a few unexpected roads to out of the way destinations during our drive to/from southern Laos. One of these places was the "Monkey Village" which we assumed would be more than just a tourist trap. Getting to the village though turned out to be quite an adventure. First we took the wrong road. Then we found what was supposed to be the nearest large village to the monkey village. After asking a few people where to go, we realized that we were driving in circles. Then out of nowhere, a sign in English and Lao directing us to the monkey village. The road crossed a narrow bridge and soon became little more than a path between rice fields. Yet everyone we asked assured us we were indeed on the right path to the monkeys. At one point we thought we should turnaround but as that would have required driving in reverse for about 1 km we decided to push on. Then suddenly we found a large lake (everyone told us to drive until we saw a lot of water) and soon after that...monkeys!

We took a few pictures of the road after we realized we were going to survive the ordeal. These photos don't begin to capture what the majority of the road looked like. In fact, these pictures are more like a 4 lane interstate compared to what we drove on for about 20 km.

Monkeys really like to eat bananas.

For two kids from Iowa, this pig and her piglets should not have been so exciting but I'll be honest, it was pretty interesting and we watched the little piglets fight for space for about 5 minutes.
