Kayaking in Ao Thalane

Our excursion off of Railay took us to the mangrove swamps of Ao Thalane. Kayaking through the narrow channels surrounded by mangrove forests and high cliffs was exhilarating and this was before the tour guides told us that they had filmed parts of Swiss Family Robinson in this area. Swiss Family Robinson!!! Who cares about seeing where Leonardo DiCaprio filmed scenes from The Beach. Swiss Family Robinson! Alas, no pirates or tree houses were spotted but we are now wondering if Swiss Family Robinson is available on DVD. [Note: Research conducted after returning from this trip suggests that Swiss Family Robinson was not filmed in Thailand--still is a beautiful place though].

We also did some sea kayaking near our hotel. Our goal was to reach a nearby island that had a small beach. We didn't think the island would be too far especially since one of us claimed that she could "easily swim there." However, our childhood in Iowa clearly did not prepare us for adequately judging nautical distances. So, after 75 minutes of paddling through jellyfish infested waters, we decided we should turn around and focus on exploring some of the nearby islands. Unfortunately, we have no photos of this expedition as our survival instinct overtook our tourist instinct.
