In June 2008, we learned that we would be going to Laos for our first post with the State Department. Since then we got married, learned Lao, bought a car, packed our belongings multiple times, and spent 24 hours on planes in order to get to Laos (made easier by the Jelly Beans provided by Ashley and Andrew). During our last three weeks in DC our apartment was full of our consumables shipment which made our small apartment look a little like a mini mart (or fondly known by Peace Corps Niger volunteers as an El-Hadji store). Our journey to Laos started by traveling to LA where we stayed for two days.
Then we flew to Tokyo where we were quarantined on the plane because of H1N1 for almost two hours. The Japanese health officials took everyone's temperature with a thermal camera. For some reason, the man with the camera kept it aimed at Beth for a lot longer than anyone else. From Tokyo we flew to Bangkok where we and our five bags arrived at midnight. Fortunately the Thais have an idiot-proof taxi system set up and we were quickly whisked to our hotel. In Bangkok, we explored the city and visited some temples and markets. We also took full advantage of the $10 Thai massages. On Beth's birthday we finally arrived in Laos and so far everything is going well. Everyone at the embassy has been very friendly and helpful and we are really impressed by everything we have seen so far.
