On November 16th a group of Embassy employees and spouses volunteered our time for former President Jimmy Carter's Habitat for Humanity project. The day started early with 30min drive north of Vientiane. Once we arrived we met with Lao, Thai, Korean, and other American volunteers. After the opening ceremony we headed out to our work sites. I was paired with two girls around my same age a Korean volunteer Juy, and a Thai volunteer Noy.
Our project was to help build an addition to a local taxi driver's house. As with all of the Habitat projects in Laos, Habitat provided a loan for supplies and most of the labor. The homeowner provided tools and the rest of the labor. Unfortunately our project started a bit slow because the homeowner had to go to the local market to pick up tools. Juy, Noy, and I spent the time playing with the neighborhood children. Once we finally started working the guys that we were working on our project weren't to keen on having ladies dig holes or help measure. Which left us very little to do. I did end I ended up getting my chance to dig part of a hole and carry the cement.
Above is a me by the hole I dug. The second best part of the day was my cool hat (please note the neck protection).
Below is a picture of our work team with the homeowner with his wife and children.
