A Sign of Things to Come

Champa, one of the SEA Games mascots showing off his boxing skills

In a few short weeks, Laos will be hosting the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games. While not quite like the 2008 Olympics, I have seen some of the rehearsals for the opening and closing ceremonies and it is clear Laos is going to try to impress (Keep in mind that while China had a population of 1 billion with which to impress, Laos has only 6 million). They are rapidly trying to beautify the city, pave roads and finish venues. How our quiet, little town handles the athletes, dignitaries and crowds remains to be seen. You will hear more about the SEA Games in the future (especially if we manage to figure out how to get tickets) but for now this article is a good introduction.
