Wat Sisaket was built in 1818 by the Chao Anou, one of the most famous Lao kings. Sadly it was the only building that survived the sacking and burning of Vientiane by the Thais in 1828. Legend has it this temple was where Lao nobility swore allegiance to the king, the Thais and the French at various times throughout history. Our experience showed it is also a very popular destination for French tour groups. The temple's wood tile roof, hundreds of Buddha statues, and faded murals lend to the ambiance of the temple and reinforce the feeling that you are in visiting an old and historic site.
The sim or main sanctuary is surrounded by cloisters which protect all of the Buddha statues.
