Independence Day and Soccer

Forty-nine years ago, Uganda gained independence from Great Britain. Celebrations in Kampala were fairly subdued, especially because the official independence day celebration was held hundreds of kilometers away in the northern town of Lira.

Independence Day was overshadowed by the Uganda-Kenya African Cup of Nations qualifier match which was played in Kampala on October 8. Uganda was attempted to qualify for Africa's continental tournament for the first time in 34 years. Sitting at the top of their group, all they had to do was win and they were in. Despite numerous chances, the game ended in a 0-0 draw and Angola leapt ahead of Uganda and took the spot. Needless to say, there was a lot of disappointment as this article sums up.
